What is Bharathanatyam?
Bharatanatyam is one of the oldest and most celebrated classical dance forms of India, with its origins traced back over 2,000 years to Tamil Nadu. Rooted in temples as a form of devotional expression, it was traditionally performed as an offering to deities, blending spirituality with artistic storytelling.
This dance style is known for its precise movements, dramatic expressions (called "abhinaya"), intricate footwork, and vibrant costumes. Bharatanatyam often narrates stories from Hindu mythology, using a combination of rhythm, gesture (mudras), and facial expressions to convey emotion and meaning. Performances are accompanied by classical Carnatic music, creating a mesmerizing interplay of sound and movement.
It’s not just a dance—it’s a profound art form that weaves together culture, history, and spirituality.
