An Arangetram is the Debut Stage Performance of a Disciple, a graduation of many years of rigorous training in the fine art form of Bharathanatyam. It is a full repertoire of dance items that reflect the different stages of the dancer’s consciousness. In Tamil, ‘Aranga’ means stage, and ‘Etram’ means ascendance or climbing, ie. The word Arangetram denotes the dancer’s ascendance to the stage and completion of formal training. An Arangetram is an intense examination for both the Guru and Disciple, as the Guru’s knowledge and many years of tutelage and guidance, as well as the Disciple’s talents, are on display for the public. It is usually done once both the dancer and Guru feels that they are ready for a public solo performance, after approximately 8-10 years. After their Arangetram, the dancer is then allowed to move forward in their learning and pass on their art form to other aspiring students.
Sydney Kalaabavanam is proud of its students who have dedicated their time to intense training in the fine art form of Bharathanatyam. We would like to dedicate this page to those students who have achieved their Bharathanatya Arangetram. Below, we have provided a small snapshot of each of the dancer’s arangetram profiles, providing a brief remembrance of their arangetrams.
