The School of Bharathanatyam

Sydney Kalaabavanam is an Indian Classical Dance Academy that teaches the fine art form of Bharathanatyam. Classes are run by Mrs Suganthy Thayaseelan in her Dance Studio situated in Girraween, NSW.

What is Bharathanatyam?

Bharathanatyam is one of the oldest classical dance forms in India, one of the great treasures gifted to humanity by the Lord Nataraj. It is a combination of drama with pure dance and a synchronised expression of mind, soul and body, accompanied by music and rhythm. It is a rich assortment of various foundations which include BHAvam (expression), RAgam (melody), THAlam (rhythm) and NATYAM (dance). Without the proper understanding and integration of these elements, neither a perfect presentation nor the enjoyment of the dance form is possible.

In an overseas environment where there are positive constraints on learning our own indigenous languages, imparting an art form like Bharathanatyam becomes an extremely arduous task, and it is to Suganthy Thayaseelan’s credit that she has overcome this difficulty in an exemplary manner
